July 13,1931

ON July 13th, when Abdul Qadir was to be tried at the Central Jail in Srinagar, a crowd had attempted to enter the penitentiary to protest his prosecution. They were demanding a fair and an open judicial enquiry into the Abdul Qadir’s case. In retaliation, the police of Maharaja Hari Singh resorted to indiscriminate firing upon the gathering, killing 22 persons and injuring a number of others.
The events of July 1931 catapulted a number of new actors including Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah onto the political stage of Kashmir.
