Woman’s death sparks protest in Kupwara
Srinagar, July 13: Death of woman allegedly due to the negligence of doctors sparked protests and clashes in frontier district of Kupwara on Friday, a local news agency KNS reported.
It said Khalida, 21, wife of Ashiq Hussain Khan of Kralgund Kupwara was admitted at Kupwara District Hospital under MRD No. 4522 on Wednesday night. She underwent a caesarian and delivered a live male bay. However, on Thursday morning she was referred to Lal Ded Hospital Srinagar after she complained of chest pain and severe headache. Upon reaching LD hospital, doctors declared her brought dead.
However family members of the deceased woman alleged that the woman died due to the negligence of doctors at the Kupwara Hospital. They said no post operative care was provided to her. “After she was shifted from the operation theatre to the ward, she complained of pain in chest and headache. We contacted doctors but no one came to help her till morning”, the family members said. “Doctors came to see her in the morning, but when they found her unconscious, they referred her to LD Hospital”, said an agitated Gulam Nabi, Sarpanch of the Tikker village, native place of the deceased woman.
PROTESTS
As the word about the woman’s death spread in the area a large number of people staged protests outside the hospital demanding action against the hospital authorities and doctors. Many protesters reportedly got injured in the clashes between police and protestors.
CMO SPEAKS
Soon after the incident Chief Medical Officer Kupwara Dr Abdul Majeed Wani constituted a 4 member enquiry team headed by Dy Chief Medical Officer Kupwara Dr Muneer Ahmad to ascertain the cause of the woman’s death. Dr Fareeda, Dr G N Mir and Dr Iqbal are the other members of the team, which has been asked to submit its report within two days. “Action under rules will be taken if the woman has died of negligence,” the CMO said. “Both mother and child were fine after the surgery was conducted on her, however when the patient complained of pain, she was referred to LD hospital Srinagar.” The CMO acknowledged that there are no post graduate degree holder gynecologists posted in the hospital. “We have 4 DGOs (Diploma holders in Gynaecology and Obstetrics) who are handling the job”, he said.
