Day 3: Doctors’ strike hits patient care at SKIMS

Resident Medicos Defiant, Seek Action Against ‘Erring Employees’

MANZOOR-UL-HASSAN

Srinagar, July 17: Patient care at the SK Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura was severely hit for the third consecutive day Tuesday due to ongoing strike observed by the resident doctors against “administrative callousness” to act against the employees, who alleged thrashed the resident doctors last week.
Sources told Greater Kashmir that no fresh patient was admitted to the hospital, except for emergency cases, thus severely affecting its functioning. “In the wake of resident doctors’ strike, the hospital affairs are managed by consultants alone who face hardships to handle patients properly as their strength is just 200. For them managing everything is not possible,” they said.
The resident doctors comprising registrars, post-graduates, house surgeons and interns are on indefinite strike following alleged severe thrashing of some resident doctors by the hospital security staff after indulging in argument over car parking.
“The deadlock continues as authorities have not given any positive response to the charter of demands put forth by the medicos working in SKIMS after the unfortunate incident happened. We will continue to suspend our routine work till the erring employees are suspended,” President Resident Doctors Association Dr Asif Meraj told Greater Kashmir.
Sources said the medicos were apprehensive to join back saying “the attacks by security staff and attendants have become a routine affair in the prime health institute, which can’t be tolerated.”
“Due to the continues neglect by the authorities, the medicos functioning in the hospital particularly the women doctors are feeling insecure and have developed fear psychosis,” Dr Meraj said.
