ROBBING GULLIBLE PATIENTS
AKSHAY AZAD
Jammu, July 20: Reflecting the deceitful practice to mint money from the gullible patients, at an average, seventy seven percent deliveries in the private nursing homes of Jammu province are done through Cesarean against thirty one percent in the government hospitals.
To hide their sneaky practices, these private healthcare centers never furnish the monthly report with the state health department - mandatory under Jammu and Kashmir Nursing Homes and Clinical Establishments (Registration and Licensing) Act, 1963.
The staggering revelations came to fore in the reply given by Directorate of Health Services Jammu to an RTI applicant Balwinder Singh also Convener of Sangarsh RTI Movement Jammu.
In the reply, Directorate of Health Services has disclosed that 5339 deliveries took place in all government hospitals of Jammu province from January, 1, 2011 to December, 31, out of these 3642 deliveries (68.21 %) were normal, while only 1697 deliveries (31.78%) were done through caesarean.
But in case of 25 private nursing homes and clinics of Jammu province, out of 3068 deliveries in the corresponding period, only 710 (23.14 %) were normal, while 2366 (77.11 %) were caesarean, the reply discloses.
These private clinics include Suvinda Nursing Home, where out of total 491 deliveries only 93 were normal, while 398 were caesarian, at Bee Enn General Hospital Talab Tillo, out of 82 cases only 8 had normal deliveries, while 74 were done through caesarian.
In Kalandi Nursing Home Subash Nagar, out of 274 cases only 57 were normal, while 217 had caesarian, Maharishi Dayanand Hospital Rehari Chungi had only one normal delivery and 50 Cesarean, New Navyug, 63, Rehari Chungi has only 43 normal deliveries and 124 Cesarean out of total 173 cases brought to the hospital.
It further states that Medicare Nursing Home Gandhi Nagar Jammu received 103 cases and all were conducted through caesarean, Madaan Hospital has only 73 normal births against 279 caesarean deliveries, Aastha Nursing Home Amphalla Jammu had total 136 cases out of which only 30 ended up normal, while 106 were done through Cesarean and Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission Ved Mandir Amphalla Jammu had a total of 174 cases registered, out of which 47 were normal and 127 were caesarian.
If compared with government hospitals of Jammu region, in Sarwal Hospital a total of 1182 cases were registered in last one year out of which 804 had normal deliveries (68.02%) while only 378 (31.97 %) were done through Cesarean and Gandhi Nagar Hospital had a total of 2132 cases out of which 1074 were normal, while 1058 were made through caesarian.
The records for the peripheral government hospitals have more positive figures with 85 % normal deliveries and only 15 percent caesarian.
In Akhnoor block, out of 1614 cases registered, 1405 (87.05%) had normal deliveries while only 209 (12.94 %) were done through surgery. In the hospitals of Dansal block out of 70 deliveries registered, all were conducted normally.
RTI activist, Balwinder Singh, while lambasting the private nursing home owners said that these private clinics mostly prefer Cesarean operations as their earnings in case of Cesarean deliveries go up by more than 200 to 300 times in comparison to normal deliveries. He further said that the government had made an act and was also contemplating to fix the rates of various tests and operations done in private clinics but the strong lobby of Clinic operators was leaving no stone unturned to continue their exploitative business.
