Ramadan and Quran

PROF G R MALIK

In the Islamic tradition, Ramadan and Quran are inseparably linked. The Quran says:
The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran, guidance for mankind and evident signs of guidance and criterion (to judge between right and wrong). [2:185]
Appropriately therefore the Prophet (SAW) gives to it, among other names, the name of shahr al-Quran (the month of the Quran). The revelation of the Quran actually began in the last part of this month on the hallowed occasion of Lailat al-Qadr. This month was specially chosen for fasting particularly as a token of thanksgiving and devotion for this tremendous blessing:
So that you glorify Allah for having guided you and perhaps you may be guided aright. (2:185)
This is the reason why from the earliest days of Islam, total absorption in the Quran became a hallmark of the month. Of course there is no day, indeed no moment, in a believer’s life when the holy book is, God forbid, neglected. But in Ramadan believers are wholly engrossed in it. In the night prayers, arrangements are made to listen to the entire book recited by trained Qaris. Apart from this, every, believer makes it a point to complete at least one revision of the book. But the question is how far is our day-to-day behaviour influenced by the book. How far is our life characterized by truth, honesty and justice? The Quran is the repository of innumerable known and unknown blessings, no doubt, but its greatest blessing is that it enters our life and behaviour and purifies it of every kind of dross and corruption. Umm al-mumineen Hazrat Aisha (RA) described the Prophet’s behaviour as the Quran itself. Every believer should try his utmost to follow the pattern set by the Prophet, the Uswah al-Hasnah (the best of the patterns of behaviour). The Quran should permeate a believer’s life and change it from within and without:
Yeh raz kisy ko nahi maloom ki mumin
Qari nazar aata hai, haqeeqat main hai Quran.
