NYC volunteers’ strike continues
‘Won’t Call Off Protest Till Govt Reaches Out To Us’
IMRAN MUZAFFAR
Srinagar, May 31: Scores of National Youth Corps (NYC) volunteers continued their hunger strike here for the fourth consecutive day Thursday, demanding “justice and fulfillment of demands.”
Shouting ‘we want justice’, the volunteers urged the state government to fulfill their demands without any further delay. “We will not call off the hunger strike till the government reaches out to us,” they told Greater Kashmir.
The volunteers are on hunger strike for the past four days at a makeshift tent established in Press Enclave here. “We are demanding our rights and not anything out of way or illegal,” said a volunteer, Imtiyaz Ahmad Sheikh.
He said “the government, at one point, promised to fulfill our demands. But nothing happened on ground. We were made to roam from pillar to post for our rights.”
The volunteers are demanding economic security and salary rather than monthly honorarium. “We want economic security,” he said. “Like other permanent employees, we are performing our duty with utmost dedication. Now we are suddenly being told to sit back at home from June 3. This is highly condemnable and unjustified. We sacrificed our education and everything else for being the part of NYC. Now we are being ditched at the last moment.”
The volunteers said the strike would continue till government “enters into an agreement with us.”
