2 wheeler mishaps on rise

3 die within week, crackdown on bikers intensifies

ROHIT PANDIT

Srinagar, June 10: The two-wheeler accidents are on rise in the City with at least three people including a girl riding a Scooty dying within a week.
The people have been complaining that bikers, mostly youth including minors, drive recklessly and do stunts giving rise to accidents.
Eyebrows are even being raised over issuance of driving licenses with complainants alleging that untrained people were making it to the driver’s seat.
The traffic police said it has started a crackdown on two wheelers. Within a week around 100 bikes have been seized and 500 odd fined while over Rs 8000 have been incurred as fine from the offenders.
“We have been receiving complaints of young bikers driving rashly and performing stunts on City roads,” said SP Traffic Srinagar, Haseeb ur Rehman. “It has been seen that young bikers in the City are not willing to follow traffic rules so it was very important for us to start this drive,” he added.
Police said it was also tracking fan pages made by stunt bikers on social networking sites like Facebook. Young bikers gather in groups on City roads to perform stunts quite frequently.
Police said the drive would continue till such practices come to an end. “A clear message should go to young bikers who do such practices and end up troubling themselves and others,” the SP said.
The DIG Traffic, Shafqat Watali appealed the parents to refrain from unduly pampering their wards by allowing them to ride bikes, before getting a valid driving license.
