Barsoo (Pulwama), July 14: Scores of people took to the streets in this south Kashmir village on Thursday after a lineman was electrocuted here.
A lineman Gulam Hassan Dar son of Muhammad Munawar Dar of Barsoo was electrocuted when he was repairing a HT line. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. Locals said that Dar had switched off the power before taking up the repair work but someone at the Receiving Station switched it on leading to his death.
As the word about Dar’s death spread people took to the streets and staged a demonstration against the Power Development Department. Protesters blocked Srinagar- Jammu highway for more than four hours. “The PDD and the administration take such incidents casually. Just a few months before a lineman was electrocuted in a similar way. The PDD employees working in receiving stations act irresponsibly and switch on the power when repair works are on,” protesters said. “Until authorities don’t take stern action against the accused the protests will continue.”
However after the Assistant Commissioner Revenue Pulwama and Police assured the protesters that stern action would be taken against the erring persons. Following which protesters dispersed off.
“I assured the residents that we will quickly act against the involved employees. After assurances they called off their protest,” Assistant Commissioner Revenue Pulwama Nasir Hussain told Greater Kashmir.
Meanwhile police have registered a case in this regard and investigations are on.
