Atrocities on detainees in Amphala jail: Geelani
Srinagar, June 15: Expressing serious concern over the “custodial torture” of Kashmiri detainees in Amphala Jail, Jammu, the chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani Friday urged Amnesty International and ICRC for intervention to save the detainees.
Geelani, who is presently under house arrest, alleged that police officers in the Jail were subjecting the detainees to “worst physical and mental torture and made their life miserable.” “Not only this, the detainees in Amphala jail are served insufficient food and denied proper medical aid,” he said in a statement today, adding that “the detainees are assembled at a place in the morning and forced to raise the slogans that are against their religious beliefs. Those who refuse to raise these slogans are beaten to pulp. The detainees are served lunch in the lawns instead of barracks of jail in these scorching hot days when temperature soars up to 45 degree Celsius in Jammu region.”
Geelani said the detainees Muhammad Amin Dar of Banihal, Muhammad Aslam of Pooch, Javid ahmad Dar of Redwani, Ananatnag, Muhammad Salim and Shabir Ahmad Gazi of Basooli, were seriously ill and no steps were taken by the jail authorities to provide them suitable treatment.
