Infection control
This refers to the state of hospital infection control practices at G.B Pant Hospital. Surveillance is a very important part of hospital infection control programme, especially in the critical areas like NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care unit), PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit), OT (Operation Theatre). Therefore it is highly recommended that all senior doctors and nurses should very carefully and regularly monitor all the hospital acquired infections like Ventilator associated infections, I.V device related infections, Catheters related infections etc. A close monitoring of these healthcare associated infections (Nosocomial) or in simple words infection developed during the stay in hospital can help to identify outbreaks and to monitor infection rates, which will in turn help reduce infant morbidity rates. Educational interventions and efforts to improve strict adherence to hand hygiene for children reduces the chances of ventilator associated infection in children. Nosocomially acquired infections still affect up to 25 percent of infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), with a disproportionate share occurring in infants with a birth weight of less than 1500 g. Hence proper infection control practices and surveillance are invaluable for preventing acquisition and spread of these infections and for identifying environmental factors that may contribute to clusters of infections. Ensuring this to a great extent will solve the present crisis of infant mortality at Childrens’ hospital.
