Of knowledge and belief
....... and there lies a lot unexplored in the realm of possibility
WORDS WITHIN
FIRDOUS SYED
It is not necessary for the knowledge to become belief also. What we know, possibly we may not believe at all. How many of us can disagree with the fact that education transforms, may be none. But how many of us actually believe that education can transform? Again an overwhelming majority in the society unconsciously will respond affirmatively. This may be a bit misleading conclusion to draw. Education transforms, but how many highly literate, and not only marginally educated ones, we find in real sense transformed souls. Education, informs, it helps to acquire skills, it sharpens our intellectual capabilities and finally it imparts wisdom. Educated we may be and skilled also, few fortunate ones may end as intelligent as well. Still there is a big question mark, how many of these intelligent can be described as wise also. Every wise, informally or formally will be educated, but every educated to be necessarily wise also, it’s highly unlikely. The dichotomy of what we know that we do not believe can easily be ascertained from the fact that the more the literacy the more we find ourselves besieged with the profound moral and ethical dilemmas. It will be wrong to link these deep dilemmas with the intellectual confusions bound to confront any serious scholarly pursuit. Our fallings are related with the erosion of moral values and not with any intellectual confusion that prompts a probing mind to further explore the horizons of knowledge. Since the education in majority of the cases fails to uplift the soul, it starkly reflects a deep disconnect between knowledge and belief.
Averse to change is crisis of belief. To a greater extent the current education system is designed to churn out skilled professionals; still there is some emphasis on inculcating ethical values. But our inability to change is due to the greater hopelessness we find ourselves inundated in. Despite deep desire to change, we believe that change is simply not possible, why so? Hopelessness is not because of any occupation, more than the physical spaces our minds are occupied that deters us even to imagine a change. Unable to dream, the possibility of change is reduced to a simple mathematical equation. Our consciousness is now conditioned to a very narrow prism of possible and impossible alone.
What nonsense, a scientific mind is sure to lament; ‘narrow prism of possible and impossible’ is a ridiculous idea. There is nothing beyond impossible, what is not possible is simply impossible, that’s it, and a logical mind is bound to declare. That’s not it, where the limits of ordinary logic end, the realm of imagination starts from there only. The logical mind is riddled with the despair of possibility. Despair and possibility apparently seems to be contradicting each other, what is possible cannot be hopeless. Indubitably possibility is always constrained with the ambit of possibility. What that is not possible seemingly is impossible, hence the despair of possibility. Logic is subservient to material facts, what cannot be explained materially can never be justified, everything else is mere fantasy, is the core belief of material world.
Logic is material but sprit transcends the limits of ordinary logic. Man is not matter alone, its combination of body and soul: “Behold, I am about to create mortal man out of sounding clay, out of dark slime transmuted; and when I have formed him fully and breathed into him of My spirit.. (15: 28/29) Body an earthy matter is limited, soul attribute of omnipresent creator is infinite. The struggle between body and soul is eternal. Where body---the matter--- prevails----in real sense it can never--- the possibilities are always limited. And once man is able to discover his real self, the possibilities suddenly become limitless. An awakened self imagines, and can an imagination be constrained with the limits of possibility. Iqbal emphatically states; Tu Ae Aseer-E-Makan! La-Makan Se Door Nahin--- O Prisoner of Space! You are not far from the Placeless Realm. Oh no, Iqbal is not fantasising, he is eloquently stating a fact. Is it possible to transcend the limits of space? Yes of-course provided one is able to discover his other self. Discovery of soul will only enable flight of soul and that space is unlimited and unconquered. And for a soul in deep slumber, flight of soul is all but a splendid fantasy. For the worshipers of logic change is constrained by the ambit of possibility. And those who imagine---dream----not only desire the change but can herald the change also. Change is not merely part of hope; it’s an act of faith. The challenge is to turn knowledge into belief, change is the answer. The journey from hope to faith will only make the change happen.
