Tap water unfit for human consumption: Report
GASTROENTERITIS OUTBREAK
ALTAF BABA
Baramulla, June 15: Reports of laboratory test of samples of drinking water in the gastroenteritis hit areas of Drangbal here in north Kashmir have confirmed that the tap water is not satisfactory for human consumption.
The Department of Integrated Disease Surveillance Project (IDSP) of health department Srinagar, had collected four samples of drinking water. The two samples were collected after adding chlorine in the drinking water, reports of which were satisfactory. However, two samples collected from the reservoir proved that the drinking water is extremely unfit for human consumption.
The report vide order no DHSK/IDPS/1180 Dtd 15-06-2012 reads that the two of the samples taken before adding chlorine had MPN count of 92, which is classified as unsatisfactory and hence unfit for human consumption.
Pertinently, Minister for PHE, Taj Mohiuddin on Wednesday had ruled out the possibility of contaminated water being supplied to the area.
Over 300 residents of Drangbal have been affected by the acute gastroenteritis disease. The residents of both Kirmani and Mir mohalla had alleged that PHE was supplying water from an open source, defecated by both humans and animals.
According to the residents of Gastroenteritis hit area the PHE during most the times supply drinking water from the nearby stream called as Turren Nagrat Nallah. The Stream according to locals is being used by nomads for washing their livestock.
“Whenever there is some snag, the PHE department supplies drinking water from the nearby Nallah. Its water is contaminated and has potential to outbreak any waterborne disease in the area” claimed Nayeem Ahmad of Kirmani Mohalla Drangbal.
