The pharmaceutical science is a health profession which encompasses a broad range of scientific disciplines that are significant to the discovery and development of new drugs and therapies. It is deals with the design and synthesis of new drug molecules. “It is the necessary element of total healthcare system, which involves interpretation of prescriptions, dispensing of drugs and devices, drug product selection and drug utilization reviews, responsibility for monitoring, intervention and provision of cognitive service,” says Prof. (Dr) M Y Shah, Head Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Kashmir. “Pharmacy is a profession concerned with the art and science of preparing, from natural and synthetic sources, suitable and convenient materials for distribution and use in the treatment and prevention of disease.”
Apart from educating the masses about the existing medicines, pharmaceutical scientists spend most of their time in laboratories discovering, developing, testing and manufacturing new medications.
DEVELOPING NEW DRUGS INVOLVES THREE STAGES:
* Research – identifying new compounds that help treat disease
* Testing – administering the new drug to animals and humans to make sure it is safe and effective
* Manufacturing – producing the new drug in large quantities for distribution
Pharmaceutical Science is designed to offer opportunities for advanced study in drug discovery technology, therapeutics and process development, pharmaceutical analysis and quality assurance. An M. Pharm student can specialize in various subjects viz. Industrial Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Quality Assurance, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Market and Management, Pharmaceutical
Technology and Biopharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Administration, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacy Practice, Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry, Pharmaceutical Analysis and Quality Assurance.
Established in 1983 with the only programme of Bachelors Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences for 26 years, the Department aside from offering Research Programmes is in a position to file patents. The department is presently engaged in collaborative research work with many leading institutes like Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, SKIMS, Srinagar, Andhra University, IIIM, Jammu, RRIM, Srinagar, to quote a few. The course aims to provide you with a programme of advanced study to equip you for a future career in pharmaceutical science, foster a comprehensive and critical understanding of the existing state of knowledge in pharmaceutical science, enhance intellectual and practical skills necessary for the collection, analysis, interpretation and understanding of scientific data, and provide practical opportunities in a multidisciplinary environment.
Bachelor in Pharmacy is a four-year degree course offered by the University of Kashmir after you have completed your Secondary School Education with a minimum of 50% marks in Medical Stream. The entrance test, conducted by the University in the month of June-July every year, shall be based upon the syllabi of class XII with 20 marks each for Chemistry, Biology and Physics. The selection shall be made on the basis of combined academic merit (40%) and marks obtained in the entrance test (60%). The programme has an intake capacity of 25 (including 10 seats for reserved categories) + 8 self financed seats.

Masters degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences is a two-year degree course offered by the University of Kashmir. Admission to the programme is open to candidates having completed their Bachelors Degree in Pharmacy, with a minimum of 55% marks, from the University of Kashmir or any other institute recognized by UGC/AICTE. Those who have qualified GPAT are exempted from appearing in the entrance test. The intake capacity of the programme is 10 (including 4 seats for reserved categories) + 3 self financed seats.
The course fee for each year is Rs 19,545.
The programme offers specialization in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy, and Pharmacy Practice.

The career opportunities in Pharmaceutical Sciences are vast. B. Pharm pass outs are eligible to teach as lecturers in the D. Pharm programme, where as M. Pharm pass outs can get the job of a lecturer in pharmacy degree colleges. A B. Pharm graduate can work as Health System/Hospital/Community Pharmacist, Quality Assurance Health Manager, Data Manager, Regulatory Manager to count a few. B Pharm and M. Pharm degree holders can take up career in Sales and Marketing, Clinical Research, or Food and Drug Administration.
“Several multinational companies like Glaxo laboratories, Ranbaxy Laboratories, Dabur India Limited, Zydus Cadila, Medley Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Limited, etc have recruited a maximum of our B. Pharm pass outs through campus and non campus interviews over the years,” says Prof. (Dr) Shah.
UNIVERSITIES OFFERING DEGREES IN PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES
JAMIA HAMDARD, NEW DELHI
Jamia Hamdard offers M.Pharm in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry, Quality Assurance, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Pharmacy Practice, and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, each comprising of four semesters. The applicants for admission to the M Pharm (General and NRI / Sponsored category) shall have to appear in the written entrance test (Weightage 50%). For NRI/ Sponsored category, the candidates have to appear in interview (Weightage 50%). The test paper will comprise of questions based on general syllabus of B.Pharm. The candidates are required to have qualified GPAT with valid score card (Weightage 50%) apart from having qualified B.Pharm / B.Pharm (Unani) or any other examination recognized by Jamia Hamdard or an institution recognized by Jamia Hamdard and AICTE, securing at least 55% marks in the aggregate of theory papers and practicals. The department also offers four year undergraduate (B.Pharm) and two year diploma courses (D.Pharm) in Pharmacy. The research programmes include Research Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Medicine, Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry.
The annual fee for M.Pharm is 90000 while as for B.Pharm and D.Pharm, the fee is 55000 and 20000 respectively. In Srinagar, the Application Form and Prospectus will be available at DSW Office, University of Kashmir, Hazratbal.

DELHI INSTITUTE OF PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES AND RESEARCH
The Institute offers a two-year D. Pharm, four-year B. Pharm, two-year M. Pharm and two-year Pharm D. M.Pharm is offered in Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics, Hospital Pharmacy, Quality Assurance, Pharmaceutrical Chemistry, Clinical Research, Pharmaceutical Management, and Herbal Drug Technology. Candidate seeking admission to the M. Pharm, course must have passed B.Pharm with at least 50% in the aggregate from University of Delhi and equivalent there to. GPAT qualified candidates shall be considered for admission. In case GPAT candidates are not available, NON GPAT candidates can be considered for admission, on the basis of merit. First 85% of the total seats will be filled by graduates of University of Delhi with GPAT in order of preference of disciplines. Remaining 15% seats will be filled by Non-DU Candidates having qualified GPAT + B. Pharm from any institute recognized by University of Delhi as equivalent. As for the eligibility of B.Pharm, the candidate is required to have qualified the Senior School Certificate Examination of the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi (12 year Course) or the Indian School Examination with 60% or above marks in aggregate in the three Science subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) from Recognized Schools in the Union Territory of Delhi or any other examination (12 year course ) recognized by Indian University or Board with minimum of 60% marks in the aggregate of the compulsory subjects namely, Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Intermediate examination in science with 60% and above marks in aggregate in the three Science subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Biology).

INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, BANARAS HINDU UNIVERSITY
The University offers four-year Bachelors Degree in Pharmacy, and two-year Masters Degree in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy.
