Police prevent Geelani from attending grandson’s wedding
Srinagar, June 20: Police on Wednesday allegedly prevented the Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani from attending the marriage ceremony of his grandson, Inam-ul-Haq.
Talking to Greater Kashmir Geelani said: “I left my Haiderpora residence this morning to attend the marriage ceremony of my grandson at Sopore (in north Kashmir), but before that I had to visit bride’s home in Baramulla as she is the daughter of my late friend and renowned Islamic scholar Syed Habibullah. He had wished that I should see her daughter off to her husband’s place.”
Geelani said that as soon as he and his other associates reached Sangrama a huge contingent of police intercepted them. “We were told that we cannot go to Baramulla but can go to Sopore. We turned towards Sopore and tried taking another road towards Baramulla but we were again intercepted by a police party near Baramulla stadium and were told that we cannot move ahead,” Geelani said.
He said that he resisted the Police move and told them that he would go by foot. “However, a police officer informed me that I am under arrest and cannot proceed further. We were bundled into a police vehicle and were set free near Narbal on Srinagar outskirts. Neither did police allow me to visit Baramulla nor Sopore despite I making clear to them that I have to attend a family function and there is no public meeting,” Geelani said.
He castigated the government for not even allowing him to attend his family functions. “Imposing restrictions and not allowing me to even reach my relatives is worst form of repression. Government thinks that by doing so it can break my resolve, but they are mistaken,” he said.
