Clamor for reforms within Hurriyat (M)
‘Amalgam Can’t Move Forward With Present Structure’

Srinagar, June 22: Voices for restructuring of Hurriyat Conference (M) and demand of action against Prof. Abdul Ghani Bhat marked the meeting of joint session of the amalgam on Thursday here.
“The members raised questions on the status of sub-committee formed eight months back for restructuring of Hurriyat Conference. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was the chairman of the sub-committee and Nayeem Khan, Professor Bhat, Saleem Geelani and Shabir Shah were its members. The members had given suggestions for restructuring of the amalgam and submitted them to chairman. Members asked about the fate of the suggestions put forth by them,” sources said. The meeting at Raj Bagh headquarters of the Hurriyat (M) lasted about eight hours.
“Members made it clear that the amalgam can’t move forward with the present structure,” they said.
The statements of Prof. Bhat on UN resolutions and its aftermath were also discussed in the meeting. “Most of the leaders in one voice called for action against Bhat under the constitution of the amalgam. They were not satisfied with a mere notice sent to him. They remained adamant on a public apology from Bhat or his expulsion.”
Some members also raised fingers at the decision of sending notices to National Front Chairman Nayeem Khan and Azam Inqilabi. “They said that the two had not done anything wrong except raising the issue of breaching of constitution by Bhat. Not sending invitation to Inqilabi to attend the meeting was also discussed.”
Professor Bhat, Bilal Gani Lone and Masroor Abass Ansari were not present in the meeting. Although Bhat and Ansari had sent representatives to the meeting, but none represented Bilal Gani Lone in the meeting. Sources also said Agha Hassan left the meeting midway.
Members also stressed on coming clear once for all on the stand of the amalgam on the resolution of Kashmir dispute. “It was deliberated that amalgam should not switch between Musharraf’s 4-point formula, UN resolutions and tripartite talks.”
“Members stressed on introspection at individual, party and collective level,” the sources said.
Sources also said that the leaders resisted issuance of press release to the media on the meeting. “They clearly told Mirwaiz that they have not reached to any understanding about any issue raised in the meeting. Why should they highlight the meeting as if all is well in the amalgam? This is the reason press statement was not issued by the amalgam about the meeting,” they said.
