Rich tributes paid to P C Mahalnobis
Srinagar, June 29: Paying rich tributes to noted statistician, late Prof P C Mahalnobis, Vice Chancellor of Islamic University of Science and Technology Prof A R Trag today highlighted former’s contribution in the fields of Economics, Planning and Statistics.
The VC was speaking at a function held to celebrate the 6th Statistics Day at Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Bemina, here today.
The current year’s theme was ‘Industrial Statistics.’
The VC on the occasion said that the quality statistics have an effect on all major decisions “we take in our public life either small or big.”
He said that the hallmark of a state’s reputation should be the credibility and the transparency of its statistical system and the statistical data.
Director, Economics and Statistics, B R Lachotra urged his fellow statisticians to work with more dedication and concerted efforts for furnishing quality data, addressing data gaps, besides making up other deficiencies for realistic planning and policy formulation.
He said reliable and up-to-date statistical data is vital for decision making both at macro and micro levels. “The industrial sector is one of the important sectors of economy in terms of generating income, employment and foreign exchange,” he said, adding that the competitive environment both at national and global levels coupled with recent shift of policies from closed economy towards liberalisation, globalization and free flow of market force through the process of economic reforms, has further enhanced the relevance of ensuring timely, adequate and reliable statistics on vide spectrum and industrial activities.
Head, Departments of Statistics, Economics and Mathematics, Kashmir University, Special Secretary, Planning and Development Department, M H Malik, Consultant (Planning) G A Qureshi, HOD Economics A S Bhat, and HOD Statistics, Aquil Ahmad also spoke on the occasion.
Among others, senior officers of the department and representatives from various NGOs attended the function.
