Seminar, poster exhibition, plantation drive at KU
Srinagar, June 5: Kashmir University Tuesday organized a series of events to observe the World Environment Day. These included a seminar, poster presentation, oral presentation, plantation drive, cultural event and rally in the campus.
A day-long seminar on ‘Green Economy: Does it include you?’ was organised by the Department of Environmental Science and Centre of Research for Development (CORD) in collaboration with Department of Students Welfare and National Service Scheme.
In his keynote address, the Vice-Chancellor of SKUAST-K, Dr Tej Pratap stressed on the need to “rethink and revisit various schemes and developmental plans which have become detrimental for the biodiversity and ecology of the land.”
Making a mention of various indices and parameters which together constitute a green-economy, Dr Pratap said “If we go by the definition of green economy available in books, it simply implies the path of progress which improves the quality of life of humans along with taking care of the environmental resources. However there is more to this definition. There are certain parameters like agriculture, renewable energy, eco-tourism, mode of public transportation and forests which are low carbon economies and any such development strategy, which encompasses utilization and optimal use of these components in an environmental-friendly manner, constitutes green economy.”
In his presidential address, the KU Vice-Chancellor Prof Talat Ahmad stressed on the need to change “our attitude towards the environment and environment-related issues.” “We need to change our approach and attitude towards our ecology and environment if we are to protect our water bodies and lakes. And one of the strategies to protect our lakes is ensuring less erosion of soil in the mountains and forests. It is this soil which gets eroded from the mountains and forests which ultimately finds its way into the lakes and other water bodies and disturbs the water hydraulic cycle.”
Others who spoke on the occasion include Registrar Prof S Fayaz Ahmad, Dean Students Welfare Prof Neelofar Khan, Director CORD Prof Azra Nahaid Kamili. Pertinently other events were held simultaneously.
