New hospital
This refers to the news, “250 bedded children’s hospital in Srinagar”. Even a 2500 bedded hospital in Srinagar will not solve this problem. We need proper planning, not a knee jerk reaction. From my experience as a paediatrician working in the UK, where well equipped hospitals exist every 30 miles, a plan of decongestion and decentralisation is needed. The basic problem is that we have every facility around Lal Chowk in Srinagar. This city is already choked and with no paediatric services available anywhere in the Valley, one can imagine the outpatient and inpatient burden on this proposed hospital and the resultant care thereof. Keep the existing facility, equip it with manpower and construct two new well equipped teaching hospitals of one third the proposed bed strength 30 miles north and south of Srinagar. Let us plan now for our future generations.
