Potato seed distributed in Machil
Kupwara, June 7: As an alternate crop for maize, 100 quintals of Potato Seed was distributed at Machil Kupwara today. The sowing of maize had got delayed due to incessant rains in the area.
Earlier, in May, Department of Agriculture distributed 90 quintals of potato seed tubers, an official statement said.
The people in the area, the statement said, have appreciated the efforts of the department “for arranging the seed just on the call of the farmers.”
Pertinently, the seeds were arranged by the department on contingent basis following the poor germination of maize crop due to inclement weather.
Notably, Machil area has been covered under organic farming like Karna in the district.
The distribution of inputs for the purpose is being started and monitored by District Agriculture Officer, Extension, Farooq A Rather, the statement said.
Chief Agriculture Officer, Kupwara M A Parray said the protected cultivation of vegetables has been made a thrust area in Machil and the hybrid vegetable seeds are being distributed in the area for the first time through Panchayat Raj institutions.
