Garbage ferrying goes nano!

Compactors to carry multiple truckloads in one go; KHARA, KHROF hail sanitation novelty on Boulevard

GK CITY REPORTER

Srinagar, June 8: At a time when Nano Technology is going trendy, something of the sort has embedded the City at least with regard to garbage collection. The loosely loaded trucks of garbage ferrying trash to dumping yard may soon be a thing a past as government on Friday rolled out sophisticated truck mounted machine called Compactor, which compresses garbage making a single vehicle carry multiple truckloads in one go, that too in a concealed form.
The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) owned Compactors started operations from the tourist hub along the Boulevard where the routine ferrying of garbage, loosely loaded in trucks, used to be pesky sight for all, particularly the tourists. Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand last week flagged off the vehicles but their functioning was awaited.
The hotel and restaurant owners along the Boulevard had been curiously waiting for the Compactors.
The sophisticated machines, will be stationed at Nehru Park from 8 AM to 10 AM, during which the garbage will have to be exhausted in the compactors.
Kashmir Hotel and Restaurant Association (KHARA) and Kashmir Hotel and Restaurant Owners Federation (KHROF) people while welcoming the move have urged their community to coordinate with the SMC for garbage collection.
“All the Hotels, Restaurants/Eating Houses/Guesthouses/Lodges are advised to avail of this facility and send the garbage in disposable bags to Garbage Compactor (at Nehru Park). Let us all help in making Srinagar City Greener and Cleaner,” the KHARA President Showkat Chowdhary and his KHROF counterpart Faiz Bakshi said in a joint handout.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the event at Nehru Park, the SMC Commissioner Dr GN Qasba said the Compactor has the capacity to compact nine odd tons of garbage.
“In routine, a truck ferries around 1.5 tons of loosely packed garbage,” he added.
Dr Qasba said the civic body aspires to extend the compactor facility to other areas as well.
“Primarily our aim is to be make the Boulevard garbage free,” he said.
The civic body’s Chief Sanitation Officer Manzoor Ahmed Turray said: “It’s a way forward for collection and transportation of garbage in a scientific manner and will leave entire City stink free once the full fledged services of compactors will be utilized.”
The SMC aspires to extend the Compactor facility to other areas of the City.
