Police detain separatist leaders in Shopian

SHOWKAT DAR

Shopian, June 8: Police Friday detained many separatist leaders including Shabir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Javaid Mir, Zafar Akbar Bhat, Yasmeen Raja and others here in south Kashmir.
“We were returning to Srinagar after addressing a public gathering at Shopian.  Police stopped us and later arrested 15 members including me, Nayeem Khan, Javaid Mir, Zafar Akbar and Yasmeen Raja,” Shabir Ahmad Shah told Greater Kashmir.
Earlier addressing the gathering, Shah reiterated his stand that “anyone who violates the constitution of Hurriyat and calls UN resolution as irrelevant has no place in Hurriyat.” “There is no place in Huriyat Conference for any leader who will deny, refuse or consider the UN resolutions as irrelevant to Kashmir issue,” Shah said. “The Kashmir issue is to be resolved through UN resolutions only.”
He said: “Hurriyat Conference was established after sacrifices were given by Kashmiri people for the Kashmir cause. We should remember these sacrifices at any cost. The Huriyat Conference is only for those who love it and have a sense of unity and love for all the martyrs of Kashmir cause,” he said.
Castigating the government for “failing to nab” the culprits of double rape and murder case of Shopian, Shah said: “Asiya and Neelofar were raped and killed in 2009 but the culprits are yet to be punished. It clearly shows how non-serious the Indian government is in protecting the rights and lives of Kashmiri people.”
The National Front Chairman, Nayeem Ahmed Khan said that ‘Kashmir issue is not the struggle for economic packages but for right to self-determination.”
While paying tributes to Asiya and Neelofar, Khan said: “They were the daughters of the nation. These tactics cannot force us to quit our struggle.”
Khan said that “Kashmir is an internationally recognized dispute and India should accept reality and shun stubbornness.”
Meanwhile National Front spokesperson has condemned the police action on the separatist leaders.
