RATS ON PROWL AT BEMINA HOSPITAL
IMRAN MUZAFFAR
Srinagar, June 8: For the past few months rats have been sneaking into the operation theaters of SKIMS Medical College Bemina –polluting the floors and disrupting power supply, official sources said.
“The operation theater in hospital needs to be cleanest of all, but rats and their fecal matter is putting the lives of patients undergoing surgeries at risk. Day-to-day surgeries are carried out amid infection and nobody is paying heed to this important issue,” the sources said.
On Friday a rat died in the main operation theater while others had gone into hiding, the hospital sources said.
“Rats have been cutting power supply lines in the operation theater where even Gynae surgeries are carried out. The state of affairs is such that such incidents of power failure and rats getting killed due to short-circuit take place almost everyday,” the hospital sources disclosed.
The hospital has four operation theaters and all of them are in the same condition: Rats dying, day in and day out and their fecal matter polluting the surroundings, they said.
“On one hand the hospital authorities are planning to introduce air purifying system to keep theaters clean whereas on other hand the theaters remain grubby.”
When contacted, the Medical Superintendent of SKIMS Medical College Bemina, Dr Nazir Ahmad Pandit admitted that such instances took place at times. “But we are taking due care to keep a check on the matter (rats),” he said.
