The Indian television has fallen from grace

Whatisup

SAJJAD BAZAZ

I received an interesting, but shocking email from one of my acquaintances. ‘The television channels have put us to shame. They have made our position awkward as our kids ask us questions which we are not able to explain’. This is what my acquaintance says that he had to take a ‘tough’ decision when he decided to remove his satellite television connection. Basically, his kid had asked him the meaning of a word. The kid had actually read a news item on Yahoo.com about auctioning off Sunny Leone’s lingerie by the actress turned filmmaker Pooja Bhatt for charity.
My acquaintance snapped his satellite TV connection few months back when one of his kids while watching the programme asked him a shocking question – ‘what is a porn star?’ He lost speech and couldn’t utter a word in response to this innocently asked question by his innocent kid. Why ‘porn star’ struck to the kid’s mind? As my acquaintance says that while watching the BIG BOSS show, which is off the air as on date, Sanjay Dutt, the veteran actor was the first one to clap when Sunny Leone revealed her porn star status. The clapping made the kid curious to know the meaning of being a porn star.
The story narrated by my acquaintance cannot be denied as we all are aware that the advancement of Indian Television has bred immorality among Indian societies and the example quoted by him suggests the extreme irresponsible behaviour towards Indian society. Why a porn star in the show? Was there any shortage of artists or celebrities? How could Indian Television bring a porn star onto their channel? Do they want to convey the message that being a porn star is perfectly fine and that is why they are promoting her? Or is it a publicity stunt for TRPs? These are mind boggling questions which have not been answered. But the only fact is that the channels promoting immorality like the one of introducing Sunny Leone as a goddess to the Indian societies are selling their self-respect and one of my friends puts it that promoting a porn star is as good as institutionalising the profession of pimps.
No one wants their family to watch a porn star in their homes, let alone vote for the one. It’s a dishonor to the women folk in the family. The irony is that how come censor board allowed this to happen on Indian television? The most disgusting part was that no reaction is from any corner against this worst immoral activity of promoting a porn star.
It may sound you incredible! But it is true. Sunny Leone is the most googled celebrity now, leaving behind Aishwarya Rai and Katrina Kaif. It’s condemnable act of Indian television society that Leone effect has promoted nothing but pornography which has captivated the mind of people, particularly young tech-savvy generation very well.
It’s not that people here weren’t aware of that “porn” but the screening of Sunny Leone by Indian electronic media helped to glorify the business of selling flesh on celluloid. And almost everyone seems to be fascinated by adult films, so much so that people are also ready to taint their esteemed portfolios!
The need is to arrest the phenomenon called Sunny Leone right now. Otherwise, immorality will engulf our societies. Let’s act as responsible citizens to neutralize Leone effect. TV channels should respect their position and show respect to the societies. We still have time at our end. Taking Leone effect into households is at the moment a mistake. But it will be a crime if repeated.
