City to get water transport soon: Lanker

Srinagar, Mar 13: To reduce the traffic congestion on City roads, Kashmir Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD) intends to start inland water transport in Jhelum from Pantha Chowk to Chattabal. This, as per an official handout, was revealed at a high level meeting of officers chairmanship of Divisional Commissioner, Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon.
The Chief Engineer, IFCD Muzaffar Ahmed Lanker apprised the Divisional Commissioner that Irrigation and Flood Control Department “intends to engage private sector and entrepreneurs to ply water taxi having a total capacity of 18 passengers in the proposed stretch after fulfilling the pre-requisite in line with J&K Water Resource and Management Act, 2010.”
“The operations shall be carried out from the existing Ghats for boarding and de-boarding purposes till the permanent infrastructure would be set established,” he added.
“The meeting was informed that proper printed tickets will be issued by the Department to the service providers who in turn have to ensure issuance of the same to passenger through proper ticketing counters at the terminal places,” the handout added.
The meeting was attended by District Development Commissioner, Baseer Ahmad Khan, Superintendent Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control, Hameed Masood Shah, Vice Chairman, LAWDA, Irfan Yasin Shah, officers of Tourism and other line departments.
