Srinagar, Mar 15: Describing kidney donation as the best feeling of human relationship, Government Medical College Principal, Prof Qazi Masood Thursday said at least 17 persons die every year in the country for want of donors.
“People should come forward to donate their kidney to save a precious human life,” said Prof Masood, while addressing a Continued Medical Education ‘Spirit of Kidney Transplant’ organized by the Department of Medicine Government Medical College to observe the World Kidney Day-2012 here. Prof Qazi Masood said the healthy donors won’t face any complications after donating the kidney.
Prof Qazi said the spirit of donation shouldn’t be diluted through the ‘malicious broker ship’. “The medical practitioners should discourage such a practice which is done to earn money,” he added.
According to the GMC Principal, patients and their families have to undergo a lot of trauma due to the lack of live donors. “A healthy person shouldn’t shy away from donating kidney to his kith and kin. He won’t have any complication after the procedure,” Prof Masoodi said.
On the occasion he announced that the GMC would install two more dialysis machines at SMHS hospital for the benefit of patients suffering from renal disorders, which he said, were increasing in Kashmir with each passing day.
Head of the Department Medicine in GMC Prof Parvaiz A Shah said the Department of Nephrology have achieved many milestones since it inception in 2007. “The department has a super specialty Cath Lab and Video EEG which is first of its kind in the Valley,” he said in his presentation.
“The departments have done more 200 biopsies and follow up of patients who have undergone kidney transplantation outside the State,” Prof Shah said.
He hailed the doctors, paramedics and other staff members of the nephrology section for their utmost dedication and providing a quality patient care.
Besides others the function was attended by senior faculty member Dr Bhat Fayaz Ahmad, Dr Ghulam Hassan Malik, Prof Masood Tanveer and Dr Tajamul Hussain Mir of Nephrology Department in SMHS.
While deliberating upon the spirit of kidney transplant Dr Tajamul gave a motivational audio-visual presentation featuring the donor recipient relationship to sensitize people towards kidney donation.
The GMC Principal later awarded noted nephrologists Dr G H Malik, Dr Saleem Wani, Prof A R Reshi, Prof Muhammad Maqbool, Dr Mufti Mehmood and Dr Syed Sajjad.
The award for Dr Saleem Wani was received by his brother, Prof Manzoor Wani. In his recorded message to the gathering, Dr Saleem Wani who was conducting a kidney transplantation procedure at SKIMS during the period said, “Best way to observe the World Kidney Day is to transplant a kidney and save a human life.”
On the occasion eight recipients and donors were felicitated by the Principal. These included a recipient of kidney transplant Wajahat Riyaz and a donor his mother Shamshad Akhtar, Muhammad Maqbool and donor his wife Mrs Maqbool, Suhail Ahmad and donor his father Assadullah Lone, and Bashir Ahmad donor his brother Abdul Majid Mushtaq.
