‘Commission's visit to India will help trial in Pak’

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

Islamabad, Mar 16: A Pakistani commission's visit to India to interview four officials who were involved in the probe into the Mumbai attacks will help in concluding the trial of seven Pakistani suspects charged with involvement in the terrorist incident, Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said today.
Basit made the remarks while responding to a question at the weekly news briefing at the Foreign Office. He said the commission will record statements regarding the attacks and hoped this would be helpful in concluding the trial in Pakistan.
The eight-member commission travelled to India earlier this week.
The panel, including prosecutors and defence lawyers, will record the statements of a magistrate, a senior police officer and two doctors who conducted the autopsies of the gunmen involved in the Mumbai incident.
The trial of the seven Pakistani suspects, including Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, has stalled for over a year due to various technical reasons.
Basit said Pakistan hoped India would share the findings of its investigation into the 2007 bombing of the Samjhauta Express train "sooner than later". Islamabad believed the matter "should be dealt with more efficiently and expeditiously", he said.
"Over five years have elapsed since that incident, yet India has not shared with us any outcome of their investigations," Basit said.
He said it was the right of the families of the Pakistani victims to know what has been done to bring the perpetrators of the incident to justice.
