HCBA to boycott work on March 27
Srinagar, Mar 22: Jammu and High Court Bar Association (HCBA) has decided to observe March 27 as ‘Martyrs day of lawyers’ to mark the martyrdom anniversary of noted lawyer and human rights activist, Jaleel Andrabi, who was allegedly killed in custody by Army in 1996.
In a statement HCBA spokesman said on March 27, lawyers will suspend work across the Valley in all courts including the High Court.
The spokesman said the decision was taken during an important meeting of its Executive Committee which was presided over by the President M. A. Qayoom.
The spokesman said HCBA also decided to organize one day seminar at Sadder court complex Srinagar. He said prominent lawyers, intellectuals, journalists, academicians, human rights Activists and members of the Civil Society will participate in the seminar.
He said the speakers will throw light on the topic ‘Kashmir Freedom Struggle in the current global political scenario and prospectus of a solution.’
The spokesman said Jaleel Andrabi was abducted by the territorial squad of Indian Army under the command of accused Major Avtar Singh on March 1996 and his body was fished out from river Jhelum on March, 27, 1996.
“The prime accused Major Avtar Singh is presently enjoying in California on Indian Passport. Despite presentation of challan in absentia against him before the Court of law, the Government of India has not allowed the accused to face the prosecution,” the spokesman said.
“Bar will also pay homage to Advocates, Ghulam Qadir Sailani, Peer Hussam-ud-din, Sheikh Muhammad Hussain, Muhammad Sultan Bhat, Sheikh Muhammad Altaf, Muhammad Abdullah Rather, Abdul Gani Bhat and others ” the spokesman said.
