60, Why Not
ENHANCING THE RETIREMENT AGE IS ABSOLUTELY JUSTIFIED; EMPLOYMENT OF YOUTH CAN BE TAKEN CARE OF BY OTHER MEANS
MUSHTAQ AHMAD
The demand of state govt employees for enhancement of their superannuation age from 58 to 60 years is more than justified. I don’t agree with the section of the people who have written a lot against the demand of the state employees, for various obvious reasons. Firstly, the Central govt employees retire at 60. In UGC and Judiciary the retirement age limit is even higher. Now coming to the burning problem of unemployment of educated and uneducated youth of the state; the state govt has already come up with a comprehensive policy “Sheri Kashmir Employment and Welfare Scheme”. The scheme in question has a potential of providing vibrant self employment opportunities to lakhs of highly educated, , skilled and semi skilled youth. On the other hand if ten thousand employees retire every year and presuming that 60% of the posts meant for direct recruitment shall become available as a result of such retirement say 6000 posts shall be available for the unemployed youth to get the govt jobs. Is this the solution to the unemployment problem of 6 lakh youth in the state? Another related question is about filling up of the already available vacancies in the State Govt. vis-ŕ-vis the complicated process of selection of the recruiting agencies. In short no state with limited resources can afford to provide Govt. jobs to 6 lakh youth. There is no point relying on retirement of 10,000 employees every year to solve the problem. Rather we lose every year a section of people with lot of experience in different fields by retiring them at a highly matured age of 58 years whose services and varied experiences can otherwise easily be available to the state for another two years by enhancing retirement age to 60 years.
