Mock drills create panic in south Kashmir
Shopian/ Kulgam, Mar 29: Mock drills conducted by police on Thursday in Shopian, Kulgam and Pulwama districts in south Kashmir created panic.
While most of the residents assumed that it was an anti-militancy operation, the unemployed youth swarmed around the police headquarters as rumors about on spot recruitment became rife.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, S M Sahai today visited south Kashmir towns of Shopian and Kulgam to monitor the drill and later held a meeting with the senior police officials.
“The police had erected concertina wires on all the major roads leading to the town since early morning and the people presumed that it as anti militancy operation,” said Bilal Ahmad, of Shopian.
He, however said that later the people got to know that police was conducting a mock drill and they went on with their routine work.
Panic gripped the nearby Kulgam district, where the same activity was conducted. However, people said that the traffic was not disrupted while the business functioned normally. “ Police had erected barricades on Shopian-Damhalroad and Kulgam-Islamabad road and the residents feared that the militants have struck,” said Adil Ahmad, a resident.
Residents said many of the unemployed youth also flocked the Police headquarters presuming that the on spot recruitment drive was being conducted by police.
“There were rumors that that Jammu and Kashmir police is conducting on spot recruitment drive, so many unemployed youth thronged the Police headquarters,” said Bashir Ahmad, an unemployed graduate.
Panic also gripped Pulwama town when police and paramilitary men appeared in the town.
While talking to Greater Kashmir Inspector General of Police S M Sahai said that it was only the routine rehearsal going on in the two districts. “Actually it is the routine rehearsal practice for the police and paramilitary personnel to train them for any untoward event. There is no need to panic,” he added.
