2 poachers held in Dal
Srinagar, Mar 8: Continuing with its efforts to protect migratory birds, police Thursday claimed to have arrested two poachers in Dal Lake and registered a case against them.
The police said acting on a tip off, its team led by SDPO Nehru Park Ghulam Jeelani arrested two poachers near Kabootar Khana in Dal lake. Police said carcass of migratory birds, a hunter gun and a Shikara used in the hunting were also seized.
“We are committed to prevent killing of migratory birds in our jurisdiction in Dal Lake. An FIR 24/2012 under section 50-51 of the Wildlife Protection Act has been registered against the accused. More arrests in the case are expected soon,” SDPO Nehru Park, Ghulam Jeelani said.
Pertinently, in January this year, Nehru Park Police had arrested several persons for poaching the migratory birds including Coot (Rallidae) or Kullar in local parlance which is protected under Schedule IV of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1978.
