When the world is fighting the fatal diseases, we are inviting rabies

FEEDBACK BY AIJAZ KHAN

I congratulate Ajaz-ul-Haque for his excellent write up " Join the debate' in which he has made a genuine appeal to the separatists to come out with their opinions on the dog menace. I have seen separatists at the forefront of every agitation against the human rights violation. Why are they silent here ?. Aren't  these dogs a constant threat to the lives of our kids. Every day, dozens of people are mauled by these beasts. At the same time I am surprised why don't people take care of this problem themselves. They should not wait for any government response as it is proved now that the life of a dog is more important than that of common Kashmiri in the so called biggest democracy of the world.
People should be made aware of the fact that there is no treatment for rabies and people die a terrible death when they get rabies. These dogs which have proved to be a threat to our existence have to go. We have to kill them before they kill us. In a self defense if you kill a person that is not a murder. Same holds true here. People have to wake up and come out of their slumbers and fight for their existence. Newspapers should ask local doctors to publish articles on the dreadful disease called rabies.
Instead of writing articles about their glorious past and their accomplishment physicians should come forward with ideas and solution about this new epidemic of dog bites which if not controlled may lead to a significant rise in the number of cases of rabies. I believe people of Kashmir have no idea and need education about the dangers of stray dog bites or even scratches. Rabies is one dreadful disease and there might be many other zoonotic diseases about  which we are not aware at this time, but it is quiet possible that these stray dogs might be transmitting many disease causing bugs to the humans every time they bite them or even scratch them.
The recent increase in dog bites is an extremely  dangerous trend as we will be heading towards some new set of diseases about which we may not be having even a remote idea. It is a high time for a common Kashmiri to wake up and fight for their existence. Even animals attack and fight others when they feel any threat or danger to their babies. Our kids are mauled almost daily why are we still sleeping. Every day we see pictures of  innocent kids who are defaced by these dogs. Parents have an obligation to protect their children and we owe an  explanation to these kids who are being attacked on daily basis by these dogs. If we can't protect them then why do we procreate them. It is really sad that when rest of the world is fighting cancer, heart diseases and HIV we in Kashmir or not even capable of fighting dogs.
