Process for Approval of Baglihar–II Begins

Ramban, May 14: The process for the approval of the second phase of 900 MW Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project on river Chenab has been initiated.
 Official sources said that beside other formalities, the Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Corporation has applied for the environment clearance of the project, for which Jammu and Kashmir State Pollution Control Board organized a public hearing here on Monday.
 Large number of locals, environmentalist and NGOs participated in the hearing and presented their view over the construction of the second phase of the state owned project.
 Regional Director Jammu Kashmir state Pollution Control Board, Showkat Choudary while initiating the proceedings briefed the gathering about the importance of conducting public hearing at Chanderkot Ramban.
 Narayan Mengi Chief Engineer Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Corporation (JK PDC) briefed the general public about the silent features of the BHEP phase two while as consultant company M/S Mantee Consultants Pvt.Ltd. New Delhi presented a detailed proposal preventive measures that will be adopted for protecting the environment during and after the construction of the project. The hearing was chaired by the ADC Ramban Basheer Ahmed Khan.
 The locals impressed for having a concrete policy regarding the development and protection of river banks as increase in the water level has already proved fatal for those living near the bank of the river.
