Book Title: Esperanza Rising
Author: Pam Munoz Ryan
Publisher: Scholastic Inc
The author of the book Esperanza Rising is Pam Munoz Ryan. The setting took place in Aguascalientes, Mexico. The setting changed after Esperanza’s father died, Esperanza’s mother, Esperanza, and the servants went to California. It took place in 1924.
Esperanza is a hardworking and desperate girl who protected her family. She took care of her mother as her grandmother, Abeulita had told her to. Abeulita is very creative and helpful. Sixto Ortega is Esperanza’s father. Senora Ortega is Esperanza’s mother. Esperanza’s parents were very kind, polite, and respectful to their servants Alfonso, Hortensia, and Miguel. Tio Marco is the mayor and Tio Luis is the governor. Tio Marco was very dumb and foolish and would only listen to his brother Tio Luis. His brother was very cunning and wanted to marry Senora Ortega.
Esperanza was born into a rich family. Her house was on a ranch in Mexico which was huge and full of servants. In 1930 there was the Revolution of Mexico, the bandits attacked Sixto Ortega and killed him. Tio Luis set their house on fire. They managed to get out of the burning house and escaped to California and lived there in a cabin. Abuelita was in Mexico while Esperanza, her mama, and the servants moved to California. One day, there was a sandstorm. Her mama became sick. Mama was admitted to the hospital and she was treated for pneumonia. Esperanza took care of her mother, worked in the fields, she was working with the yarn and the crochet hooks. She learned how to work hard and make money to help her family. After five months mama gets well. Miguel gets Abuelita from Mexico and they celebrate Esperanza’s birthday.
The moral of the story taught us about: We should be happy and thankful with what we have; we should adjust ourselves to the changes in life.
I chose the book “Esperanza Rising” because it shows what it is like to be poor and rich. I would recommend people to read this book because it taught us an important lesson. It describes how Esperanza goes from being a pampered rich girl on a Mexican estate to a poor farm worker in California.
