Police question 6 in Pattan poster row
Nothing Substantial Yet: IGP
SHABIR IBN YUSUF
Srinagar, May 15: Police have questioned six persons in connection with posters appearing in north Kashmir’s Pattan area earlier this week. Posters had asked people to desist from favoring security agencies and not to participate in forth coming civic polls.
Handwritten posters issued on behalf of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen had also named 13 persons, including a woman. Posters had claimed that these persons are on the “hit list” of the outfits.
The message in poster, according to police, read: “Kashmiris have been giving sacrifices for a cause and some people are working for security agencies. Despite repeated warnings they have not mend their ways. They will be taken to task soon,” reads the translation of the posters in Urdu.
In the poster, police said, Panchs and Sarpanchs have also been asked not to participate in the civic body elections.
Police have registered a case under section 13 of Unlawful Activities Act (UAA) in police station Pattan. Station House Officer (SHO), Police Station Pattan Muhammad Abdullah told Greater Kashmir over telephone that they have questioned six persons and most of them were having militant links in past. “The questioning has not yielded anything substantial. The questioning is on,” the SHO said.
He added that police are investigating all angles. “ We cannot rule out rivalry and mischief mongering by some unscrupulous elements,” the SHO added.
A senior police officer from Baramulla said that posters seem fake. “It did not seem a poster of militants as its letter head is scanned and the rest is handwritten,” he said. “These posters have had little impact.”
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir zone S M Sahai said that investigations are on and people who have been mentioned in poster would be provided security. “We are investigating, nothing substantial yet. We will give them security,” the IGP said.
