Reach out to students in rural areas: Guv to KU

Srinagar, May 15: Emphasizing upon the need to provide quality education to students living in far-flung areas, Governor, N N Vohra on Tuesday said University of Kashmir needs to play proactive role in disseminating and broadcasting educational programs through electronic media for the students in rural areas.
“There are thousand of students who are not in position to attend lectures by renowned professors and educationalist in KU campus, as they live in far off places. But we need to provide them this facility and it can only be facilitated by communication technology with the help of television,” Vohra said while speaking on the inaugural function of 2-day national seminar on “Television and New communication Technologies” organized by Educational Multimedia Research Centre ( EMMRC) at KU campus here.
Vohra, who is KU chancellor, asked EMMRC to broadcast documentaries, education program through different communication technologies, so that the students in rural areas don’t remain deprived of education.
“ I have told management of EMMRC to make a documentary on Amarnath Yatra through which awareness and information regarding Yatra can be provided to Yatris,” he said adding that pilgrims are not aware how to deal with changes in altitudinal pressure and the documentary can also them in understanding these things.
“As a former teacher, I know how the profession of teaching has evolved from holding chalk and writing on black board to using latest technology in order to teach students. Television was the decisive factor which led to this change,” he said adding that TV paved the way for spread of education through the medium of INSAT and, thereafter, through a number of education channels, some of which run round the clock education programmes.
Vohra said: “We have traveled a long distance in spreading education through the medium of communication technology through the country wide classrooms (CWCR) programme and TV channels telecasting knowledge based programmes.”
Vohra praised Professor Manzoor-ul-Amin, founder and former Head of Media Education Research Centre (MERC) for her renderless service. “I am very happy that Manzoor Sahab is present here, he is the pioneer of media in Kashmir and I respect him a lot,” he added.
Later Governor presented Memento and a shawl to Manzoor-ul-Amin and congratulated the University for organizing this seminar and wished fruitful deliberations to the participants.
Prof Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir, said that the University is taking many initiatives to spread the knowledge.
Dr. T R Kem, Director, Consortium for Education Communication, New Delhi, lauded the role of Vohra in taking interest in promotion of education .
Prof. Manzoor-ul-Amin, founder and former Head MERC, in his key note address, said: “Effective use of latest communication technology can help in rapidly securing the objectives of learning and development.”
In his welcome address, Dr. Shahid Rasool, Director, EMMRC, said the seminar would be spread over four working sessions. He said that 90 experts from all over the country are participating in this Seminar in which 65 papers will be presented by the noted experts.
Dr. Salima Jan, Seminar Coordinator, presented Vote of Thanks.
HOD MERC, S Mufeed Ahmad and other faculty members from MERC were present on the occasion.
"I directed MERC students to be present on the occasion in order to gain knowledge from such seminar in which different scholars will speak and share their experience," said Prof Mufeed.
