Choosing Administration

It shouldn’t be at the cost of professional degrees

CAREER

ABDUL HAMID MIR

Given the growing charm of white collar jobs, there is a pooling in of cream from various professional fields into Administrative Services. Presently Civil Service is considered as an elite service in almost every corner of India, and Kashmir is no exception. But if this trend continues, we will face acute shortage of skilled human resource in other vital fields (other than civil services).  In case an aspirant wants to pursue career in administrative services, he or she should go for a simple degree in Arts or Science, rather than striving hard to get a berth in some professional course and ultimately wasting it later on by switching to civil services.
An administrator does not necessarily need specialisation in a particular field. A civil servant is expected to look after the routine administrative work by controlling his subordinates down the hierarchy and obeying/implementing the orders from his superiors and policy makers. For discharging such duties, the newly appointed public servants are being provided sufficient trainings by the government. So there is no fun in going for a career in civil service after wasting a precious berth and time in some professional course. It is highly unlikely that everyone will wish to become a KAS or IAS officer. Increasing number of aspirants from the valley are getting into Administrative Services, especially IAS, IPS etc. However, it shouldn’t be at the cost of depriving other fields of quality human resource.
All the fields, including administration, are equally important. We can’t afford to take any particular field for granted. It is not possible that every qualified person can travel in an ambassador vehicle. We need competent teachers, efficient doctors and skilful engineers as well. Career related decisions must be taken soon after finishing high school, so that there is no incompatibility in choosing and adopting a suitable career. Contentment stems from selfless service, dedication and hard work irrespective of the nature or level of the post.
