For clean, green Srinagar, Dy CM holds Public Durbar

Admits lack of drainage; stresses for co-ordination between Govt departments, consultation with stakeholders for City development

M HYDERI

Srinagar, May 1: In a bid to boost the recently coined slogan of “Clean Srinagar, Green Srinagar”, Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand on Tuesday attended a "SMC Public Durbar", stressing for coordination between various government agencies and consultation with stakeholders for development of this historic City.

THE CANDID CONFESSION
After listening to people from various walks of life, Tara candidly admitted that the City had been witnessing civic problems particularly because of lack of co-ordination between various government departments.
“I endorse your views that there remains a lack of coordination and issues like digging up of road soon after macadamization pop up… This mess needs an end I’ll ensure that hereafter there’s no lack of coordination by personally monitoring the issue,” Tara flanked by Director Information Khawaja Farooq RenzuShah and the host Srinagar Municipal Corporation Commissioner, Dr GN Qasba, said.

PUBLIC DURBARS TO BE MONTHLY
And to make the government more accountable before the people, he said, durbars like the one hosted today by the SMC would be made a regular feature this summer.
“I’ll be meeting you people at-least once a month but such meetings will be threadbare and issue centric,” he informed the gathering.

DRAINAGE NIL
The Deputy Chief Minister admitted that the drainage facilities in the City were “almost negligible.” “Drainage to Yahan Na Ke Barabar hai(Drainage system is virtually non-existent),” he maintained.
He said Rs 15 crore have been released for construction of drainage system in Srinagar. “It won’t suffice the needs of the entire City but will be a step forward,” he said.

UPHOLD PARADISE PRIDE
While stressing the need to uphold the opinion that Kashmir is paradise on Earth, Tara said the Valley, particularly Srinagar should be kept clean.
“Sanitation has been improving and should improve further through use of latest resources including mechanized equipment,” he said.

DAL CONSERVATION
Commenting over Dal conservation and rehabilitation of its dwellers, he said, there were “initial hiccups which were subsequently cleared through personal efforts of Prime Minister, Azad Sahib and Sonia Ji for which I hail them.”
About the streetlights, he said additional Rs 50 lakhs would be released to make the City be more illuminated.

THE PUBLIC WOES
Representatives of business fraternity particularly from the City centre areas like Poloview and Residency Road, pitched their woes before the Deputy Chief Minister who was accompained by  Youth Congress leader Irfan Naqeeb and others..
They said there was problem of drainage system while space needs to be created for parking of vehicles.
“Otherwise, roadside parking of vehicles triggers traffic jams and it ultimately affects our business,” the traders said even as they hailed the SMC Commissioner for visiting their areas and brining them “face-to-face before the government top brass.”
The traders’ fraternity also highlighted the problem of scarcity of streetlights. They equally sought improvement in beautification particularly along Poloview, the Bund and the Residency Road while the representatives of hoteliers highlighted their issues.

THE CHANGE
For a speedy redressal of grievances, the SMC had ensured the presence of its concerned officials who gave their expert view on-the-spot. Tara Chand assured that their problems would be looked into on priority basis.

BRAINCHILD SPEAKS
In his address, Dr GN Qasba said the civic body aspires to realize “Clean Srinagar, Green Srinagar”, a slogan believed to be his brainchild.
“Public co-operation and co-ordination is a must for healthy development and this why we held a one-on-one with the stakeholders so that things happen in a transparent manner,” Dr Qasba said.
While the invitees appreciated the SMC for holding the Public Durbar, Dr Qasba said such events would be held in future as well.

I AM SECULAR, NEVER BELIEVE IN DISCRIMINATION: TARA
Srinagar, May 1: Dispelling the notion of alleged discrimination with any part of state on lines of region or religion, Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand on Tuesday clarified that he was the man who “believes and acts on the mantra of Secularism, my party believes in.”
“I have never had any discrimination in mind on lines of Jammu, Kashmir or Ladakh. Or, religion of being Hindu, Sikh or Muslim. All are equally before me because I go by the party  idiology I represent and it teaches me secularism,” Tara said.
