‘Shopian to have Rs40 cr satellite fruit market’

Srinagar, May 23: With a view to further augment the marketing facilities for the growers and traders in the apple town of Shopian, Govt will shortly establish Rs. 40 crore satellite fruit and vegetable market.
The new satellite fruit and vegetable market will be set up over a land of 500 kanals, which has already been identified and work on the project will start during the current financial year. This, according to an official statement, was disclosed by the Minister for Health, Horticulture & Floriculture, Sham Lal Sharma, during his day long visit to Pulwama and Shopian districts today.
Addressing the growers and traders at Shopian, the Minister said that Government was aware about the problems of the traders of this important town and keeping in view the huge production of quality apple in the area, the Govt has decided to establish another fruit market. “The new satellite market would help the traders to dispose off their products hustle free, besides large number of traders from different parts of the country would expand their activities,” he added.
The existing market which is also functioning satisfactory will continue to function as it is and new market will be equipped with latest facilities, like cold storage, processing units and other allied facilities according to the needs of the traders. This will give fillip to the trading activities of this town and help in improving the State’s economy, the Minister maintained.
