Srinagar, May 23: Army Wednesday said that they foiled an infiltration attempt by militants on the Line of Control in Kupwara district of north Kashmir.
Giving details, a senior officer of Kupwara-based 28 Infantry Division told Greater Kashmir that in the late hours of Tuesday they noticed militant movement in Gojar Dori area of Keran Sector.
He said around 8 to 10 militants tried to sneak in but Army forced them to return. “They were heavily armed,” he said adding that the militants opened indiscriminate fire on Army. “The fire was retaliated triggering an encounter. The militants tried to take advantage of darkness and firing to enter, but the alert troopers chased them, thus forced them to return,” the officer said.
He said the exchange of fire continued for some time, but the troopers carried out firing intermittently throughout the night. “To keep them away the intermittent firing continued for whole night,” he said.
The area, the Army officer said, has a difficult terrain and it was difficult to carry out searches. “In the morning, helicopters carried out aerial survey. Now it is clear that no militant has sneaked in, they have returned,” he said.
Defence sources said Army has been alerted on LoC in Kupwara sector. “The troopers have been asked to remain vigilant and carry out searches in their respective areas,” sources said.
Army said this was the second infiltration bid foiled this year. Earlier six militant were killed in Uri sector of Baramulla district.
