‘BEACON developing Sumbal-Sonawari road on fast track’
Srinagar, May 4: The Border Roads Organization today said that it was developing the Sumbal-Sonawari road on fast track.
In a communiqué BRO said, “BEACON is taking all the necessary precautions to give traffic worthy and sustainable road to the public of Sumbal-Bandipora and had even stopped the resurfacing works during rains in April to maintain quality of riding surface.”
“The 35 kilometer long road stretch of Sumbal-Sonawari was taken over by Project BEACON on February 9, 2011 for maintenance from the PWD. Consequently after taking over of road by 122 RCC/32 BRTF on March 11, 2011, all the resources deployed on this 35 Kilometer stretch has been withdrawn by PWD. For maintaining this road and make it traffic worthy, regular maintenance is imperative. Therefore a case was taken up with BRDB Secretariat to include this road in BRDB Programme for GS maintenance under SC-I (IW) grant (Hilly Area). Since this road has recently been taken over from PWD, BRO had to take up case for allotment of funds for maintenance of the road. In the normal course after taking over of a road, getting Government sanction for resurfacing and maintenance works takes up to almost three years. However, Project BEACON had got the necessary sanctions in less than a year. Additionally the villagers along the road had blocked the drainage system, which causes the inundation of road surface during rains that further damages the road,” the communiqué said.
“Resurfacing of this road has also been planned by BEACON from Sumbal to SK Bala Company (Kilometer 25.25 to Kilometer 37.500) and Kilometer 58.500 to Kilometer 60.250 and the work is scheduled to be completed by mid June. Till date four Kilometer of resurfacing has already been completed. The work had got delayed due to continued cold weather conditions and rains. It is expected that the potholes of balance stretch would also be completed by mid June,” the communiqué added.
