Police census aimed at dividing Muslims: JAH Chief
ZAHID MAQBOOL
Srinagar, May 4: President of Jamait –Ahlihadees (JAH) Ghulam Rasool Malik on Friday accused the Jammu and Kashmir Police of conducting census in Srinagar to ‘create a divide between Muslims and weaken the Kashmir struggle.’
“They are trying to create a divide in the community. We fail to understand why they are asking for the information regarding the sects people follow. I received calls from different areas of Srinagar who informed me that police are asking them whether they are Ahli -Hadees, Wahabi, etc. It is very unfortunate,” he said while addressing a Friday congregation at party headquarters here.
Accusing the government of double standards, Jamait Chairman said, “Hindus also have different groups and sects, but no one asks them about which ideology they subscribe to.”
Admitting that there are some reservations on minor issues within the society but that ‘does not mean that they should exploit those things and divide us.’
“A well designed policy is being carried out to weaken our struggle for Kashmir issue. We are one in the cause and no one will be allowed to divide us by using these tactics.” Jamait president said.
Reaction of Jamait chairman came days after Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had accused government of playing a sectarian card to ‘weaken the Kashmir movement’.
When contacted City police chief, Ashiq Hussain Bukhari, said, “Yes we are doing census as per police act, but it is not true that we are asking for affiliations with different groups.”
