Srinagar, May 4: After topping the state-level Combined Services Examination in 2010, Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar has achieved another feat by cracking the All India Civil Services Examination.
Ovessa Iqbal of Leh was the first Muslim girl from the state to qualify the prestigious examination last year and has already joined the Indian Foreign Services (IFS).
Sehrish figures at 118th ranking in All India Civil Services Examination, the results for which were declared by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Friday.
Daughter of a former bureaucrat-turned politician Syed Asgar Ali, 25-year old Sehrish, credits his family particularly her father for the marvelous achievement. Sehrish’s mother Irshada Begum, is a housewife and the family originally belongs to Kishtwar town in erstwhile district Doda.
“I owe everything to my family for this feat. My success wouldn’t have been possible without their support and prayers,” Sehrish told Greater Kashmir over phone.
The medico who did her schooling from Presentation Convent School Jammu is not new to success.
She first cracked Kashmir Administrative Services Examination -2009, when she was not even eligible to appear for it.
“I appeared in state level civil service examination in 2009, but my result was withheld as I did not fulfill eligibility criteria of qualification. That time I had not completed my graduation in medicine at that time,” she said.
Next year, she again appeared in CSE and topped the list.
But she was not content with her success and set her foot on cracking All India Civil Services Examination.
“After topping CSE my dream was to serve people from a higher platform. My hard work and proper planning helped me a lot to realize this dream,” she said.
Serish’s message to her fellow womenfolk of the state is to work hard to realize their dreams.
“Nothing is impossible. Work hard, success will touch your feet. You just need proper guidance and planning to crack the civil services examination,” she said and added that more girls should go for such examinations instead of hankering after careers in medicine and teaching.
Pertinently, Fareeda Abdullah was first Muslim woman from JK to qualify All India civil services, but she didn’t join it. Her husband Arif S Khan who died in 2010 was India’s ambassador to Italy.
