Boy killed in Handwara explosion

Kupwara, May 6: A boy was killed at Handwara in Kupwara district Sunday afternoon when an explosive device exploded accidentally.
Eyewitnesses said that Tariq Ahmad Shah (8) son of Abdul Majeed Shah resident of Shirhama Mawar died on the spot when he fiddled with an explosive device in the compound of his house.
After the death, frenzied scenes were witnessed in the village. Member of Parliament Sharief ud-din Shariq, Minister of State for PWD Javid Ahmad Dar and MLA Langate Er. Rashid rushed to the spot and pacified the mourners.
Locals said that two years ago an encounter broke out in the area between forces and militants which continued for two days. They said that after the encounter the area was not sensitized as a result live shells and other explosive devices remained unattended.
More than 12 persons, most of them children, have died and several left crippled in different accidental explosions during the past year in the state.
Rights groups have long been demanding the clearance of land mines in the state.
