Bus bay on Barzulla bridge draws flak
SYED IMRAN ALI HAMDANI
Srinagar, May 7: The erection of a bus bay on Barzulla bridge on the Airport Road has drawn flak from experts who say the structure is violation of traffic engineering norms.
The Roads and Building (R&B) department has constructed a fabricated structure over the bridge and a zebra crossing has also been painted right across the road.
The bus bay lies near the turn which leads to Bones and Joints Hospital Barzulla.
For years people had been using the spot to get into or out of public transport buses plying on this south City route.
But the place was never a designated bus bay because its position wasn’t given a nod by the traffic regulatory authorities who found it improper.
But in a recent development, a high level team constituted by the divisional administration with members from concerned departments designated spots where bus bays or crossings could be raised.
And in doing so, the allegedly improper place was endorsed as a designated bus bay hinting that if a violation becomes a routine, the authorities could endorse it.
“Nowhere world over does a responsible government construct a bus bay on a bridge. This is sheer violation of norms and equally an endorsement of violations,” said a retired engineer requesting not to be named.
When contacted Chief Engineer R&B Mushtaq Ahmed Lone said there was no violation of norms.
“The bus bay hasn’t been constructed over the canal but on the bund portion and it was the only solution to provide respite to people visiting the nearby B&J Hospital and travel by buses,” the Chief Engineer explained.
