Civic polls may be deferred
Srinagar, May 7: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday hinted that municipal elections in Jammu and Kashmir will now be held towards the end of the year.
“We are yet to take a decision on whether elections to municipal bodies, other than the corporations in Jammu and Srinagar, should be conducted or the polls should be altogether deferred,” Omar told reporters after the reopening of civil secretariat here. He said a decision in this regard will be taken by the state Cabinet during its first or second meeting here. “We had plans to hold elections before the onset of tourism season this year but could not do so as the tourist season started much earlier,” Omar said.
However the Chief Minister said the elections will be definitely held this year as huge amount of funds under various centrally-sponsored schemes were withheld. “Only the timing of the elections is something which has to be decided,” Omar said.
The municipal polls in the state were due in 2010 after the term of the bodies elected in 2005 ended.
