Plan to host big feast?

Keep Rs 500 handy, inform SMC or face music

GK CITY CORRESPONDENT

Srinagar, May 7: The next-time you plan to host a big feast for celebrating marriage or some other gala event, don’t fail to inform the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) or else you could be fined.
Well, the penalty won’t be for having not invited the SMC people to the party but for not apprizing it about the event in advance so that adequate arrangements could be put in place for disposal of waste.
But this won’t come free of cost and the host will have to pay Rs 500 to the SMC, a fortnight prior to the scheduled event.
Stepping further to realize the recently coined slogan of “Clean Srinagar, Green Srinagar”, the SMC has made it mandatory for the Srinagarites to pay the additional sanitation fee for hosting the feasts. In lieu of this payment, the SMC assures to provide dumper bin during the celebrations.
Notifications in this regard on behalf of the SMC Commissioner Dr GN Qasba are appearing in newspapers.
When contacted, the SMC Commissioner said the move aims to “improve sanitation for a cleaner greener Srinagar.”
“Moreover, such waste when thrown on roads used to prove a breeding ground for stray dogs whom we aim to contain through effective garbage collection at the source,” Dr Qasba told Greater Kashmir.
Dr Qasba has been claiming that if roadside littering is avoided the stray dogs will migrate looking for food. “And this we want to cash for our two pronged strategy against dog menace,” he added.
