UN resolutions form bedrock of Kashmir issue: Mirwaiz

Rules Out Possibility Of Separatists Joining Hands With Mainstream Parties

ZAHID MAQBOOL

Srinagar, May 8: Two days after senior Hurriyat (M) leader Professor Abdul Gani Bhat claimed that United Nations resolutions were not applicable in Jammu and Kashmir, Chairman of the conglomerate  Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Tuesday downplayed his remarks saying, UN resolutions form the bedrock for the resolution of the Kashmir issue. He also ruled out any possibility of separatists entering into an alliance with mainstream parties.
“The constitution of the Hurriyat Conference clearly states that UN resolutions form legal basis of the dispute. The resolutions are bedrock of the Kashmir issue and our struggle,” Mirwaiz told a news conference after chairing the meeting of the Executive Council at the party headquarters here.
He said that alternative solution can only be possible if India, Pakistan, and Kashmiri leadership develop a consensus on the resolution of the issue. “There are only two ways of resolving the issue one according to UN resolutions and other by holding tripartite talks. But negotiated settlement should be acceptable to all. The settlement should be according the wishes and aspirations of the Kashmiris,” Mirwaiz said.
Referring to the statement of Professor Bhat regarding separatists joining hands with mainstream parties, Mirwaiz said, “Let them say goodbye to the mainstream politics and join us. Then only we can think about it. Hands of mainstream politicians are soaked with the blood of Kashmiris. They claim to be the well wishers of people, but actually they are anti-people.”
Mirwaiz said that Hurriyat is ‘not a party but a political forum’ where it is the duty of every member to adhere to its constitution.
“All the members have to say everything under the ambit of the constitution. There may be different views of the members regarding the issues. But they should not go to public. We have a vibrant structure where views of everyone are respected. We encourage discussions and deliberations in the party. But we will not tolerate anything against Hurriyat constitution.”
Taking to Greater Kashmir, Mirwaiz said that Hurriyat would be holding the meeting of all executive and general council members next week.
