Srinagar, Nov 10: A local court Saturday asked Inspector General of Police Crime Branch Kashmir to obtain information confirming death of Major Avtar Singh from Interpol by the next date of hearing on December 8, 2012.
 Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Srinagar, Rajeev Gupta after taking on record a communication letter from IGP addressed to Assistant director, CBI Interpol seeking information about the death of Singh, directed the Nodal Agency to obtain the information attesting the death of accused. The letter has been dispatched on October 15, 2012.
 Citing the court directions, the IGP has written to Assistant director, CBI NCB Interpol New Delhi for a copy of the original information submitted by Selmo Cornors office California to USNCB Interpol Washington with regard to death of Major Avtar Singh.
 The court on October 10 had directed IG police (Crime Branch) to get a copy of FIR vis-à-vis the death of Major Avtar Singh either directly from Selma Police station California or get a copy of the information from the Interpol.
 Major Avtar Singh who reportedly killed himself along with his family members this year in California on June 9, was accused of kidnapping and killing prominent lawyer Jaleel Andrabi in 1996.
 The 47-year-old Singh had fled to the United States after he was accused of killing Andrabi, whose body was found floating in the River Jhelum in March 1996. Andrabi, 42, was allegedly detained by a unit of Rashtriya Rifles led by Major Singh and his body was found a day later.
 A murder case was registered against Avtar Singh and others after the victim’s family pursued the matter in the High Court and alleged that the Government was covering up the murder. The case is, however, pending trial before the court of CJM Srinagar for over a decade. The Court had directed extradition of the accused Major from USA.  Complainant was represented by Advocate Mir Hafizullah.
