Srinagar, Nov 10: Police on Friday night arrested a non-local person on the charges of attempting to torch a Masjid in Dastgeer Sahib (RA) Shrine in old city here.
Police have a registered a FIR No. 90 U/S 436 at police station Khanyar against the accused, whom doctors declared as insane.
Giving details a senior police official told Greater Kashmir that at around 10 pm last night, people and guards posted at Shrine of Dastgeer Sahab (RA) informed the officials at police station Khanyar that an unknown person is trying to burn something at the top story of the shrine.
The police official said that a police team led by Station House Officer Khanyar Rashid Ahmad reached the spot. Officials witnessed smoke billowing out and flames in the top story of a shrine. He said before the police could arrive, locals had nabbed the accused and had thrashed him.
The official said the arrested person did not talk. “He only says Chutan. Even he did not disclose his name,” the official said adding that he was taken to Psychiatric Hospital Srinagar where doctors declared him insane.
“The doctors at Psychiatric Hospital advised us that he should be handed over to next of his kin,” the official said. “ We have not been able to establish his identity and whom he should be handed over to. We are unable to locate his address.”
The official said on Saturday morning the eminent citizens of the area came to police station. “The arrested person did not talk in-front of them,” he said and added that residents were satisfied.
He said that the arrested person was produced before court. “They court directed us to keep him in Psychiatric hospital for treatment,” he said.
Pertinently, on June 25, the revered two centuries old shrine of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani (RA) popularly known as Gaus-ul-Azam Dastgeer Sahab (RA) was gutted in a mysterious fire incident at Khanyar area plunging the Valleyites into anguish and grief.
