Suicides go up at alarming rate in Jammu

Jammu, Nov 11: Indicating how cut throat competition, increased stress and other social factors are taking a heavy toll on common masses, especially the youth, at an average 4 to 5 person make suicidal bids with one ending up in death in Jammu region, everyday,.
The figures show that stressful deaths are more alarming among the youth, who have become highly prone towards committing suicide
Sources informed Greater Kashmir that during last few years, the suicide cases have recorded abrupt increase and presently 4-5 suicide attempt cases are reported in various hospitals of Jammu province daily. “Out of these 4-5 a case, one person ends up in death” sources said, adding that the figure of the youth is highest in the suicide cases.
As per the figures, in the year 2008-2009, 122 youth committed suicide, while in 2009-2010, 118 youth ended their life across the state. During 2011-12 about 220 cases of suicides have been reported so far in the state.
Head of the psychiatric department, Dr. Jagdish Thappa listed various reasons for increasing tendency of committing suicides among the people. “Unemployment, unrest in society, depression, stress, urbanization, cut throat competition, financial problems, high expectations of parents from their children in examination; incompatibility in relations between married couples and other social factors are some of the reasons, which generally leads to suicidal tendency among people” he said.
He said that these factors result into suicidal depression in a person and if the same is not treated, the subject ultimately commits suicide.
A frustrated person needs strong social support, to do away with frustration and suicidal depression, he pointed out.
“The suicidal depression needs to be diagnosed in its initial stage. The parents, family members shall interact more and more with the member, who seems depressed. Family shall interact with the depressed member frequently and try to sort out his problems. It will help him to recover from melancholy” he advised.
As per the Health Department records in last six months, about 8000 people have sought psychiatric help from the special OPDs, set-up at government hospitals, including Gandhi Nagar Hospital, Jammu and District Hospitals of Udhampur, Rajouri, Kathua, Samba and Poonch.
